Gretchen Williams

Gretchen Williams moved to Albuquerque in 1999 to study flamenco at the University of New Mexico under Eva Encinias-Sandoval.  Gretchen quickly became a member of Alma Flamenca, while pursuing her degree in anthropology.  She received her B.A. in Anthropology from UNM and is currently working towards a Master’s degree in Dance History with an emphasis on Flamenco History.  She teaches both children and adults at the National Conservatory of Flamenco, and is an instructor of dance and flamenco history at UNM.  While Gretchen has lived in various parts of the world including Australia and the Caribbean, her numerous visits to Spain have been most influential.  Gretchen has conducted ethnographic field work in many parts of Spain, including Vigo (Galicia), Jerez de la Frontera, Granada, and Madrid.  She is currently an apprentice dancer in Yjastros, the American Flamenco Repertory Company under the direction of Joaquin Encinias.
