Jason Martinez Jason Martinez, a flamenco dancer and cajón player, finds the rhythmic experience of flamenco and the intensity of its movements very satisfying. He feels that flamenco gives him a greater vocabulary to express himself with, explaining, "You bring who you are into it, rather than just learning imitation." Jason draws his inspiration from loved ones, his Chicano heritage, and "most importantly," he adds, "from the Lord Jesus Christ, who tells us that, '…even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve and to give His life as a ransom for many,' (Mark 10:45)." Jason, a native of Albuquerque, NM, found flamenco through the dance program at UNM where he studied extensively under Eva Encinias and Pablo Rodarte. In Seville, Spain, he studied under Javier Cruz. Jason continued his flamenco training under Joaquin Encinias and Omayra Amaya at the National Institute of Flamenco. He credits much of his recent progression as a dancer to Bill Evans and Joaquin Encinias, he says, "Who have shown me new movement possibilities and have equipped me with the most basic and important tools for continued growth." Jason teaches beginning cajón for NIF workshops and is an apprentice dancer with the American Flamenco Repertory Company, "Yjastros," directed by Joaquin Encinias.
