Joaquin Encinias

Joaquin Encinias began dancing as he began walking.  Born into one of the few flamenco families in America, flamenco is a way of life for Joaquin.  He is a fourth generation flamenco dancer and musician who received his earliest flamenco lessons listening to his grandmother Clarita Garcia de Aranda sing in her garden.  He performed in Clarita's company at age 5 and became a soloist in his mother's company at age 12.  Today, Joaquin is widely acclaimed as the premiere male flamenco dancer in the United States.  His unique dance style is a dynamic blend of power, passion, technical mastery and elegance.  Joaquin's musical talent and deep understanding of the art form make him a highly sought after flamenco artist and instructor.  He is an accomplished cajón player and has studied and performed many other forms of dance and music, recently appearing on a recording produced by Jazz pianist Danilo Pérez.  He has performed as a guest artist with The Jose Greco Dance Company, Amaya, Flamenco Sin Limites, Ritmo Flamenco, Solera Flameco, among others.  Joaquin has worked closely with world-renowned artists including Antonio Canales, Eva La Yerbabuena, Los Farrucos, and Manolete.  In 1999, he worked with director Debbie Allen in the production "Soul Possessed," which premiered at the Kennedy center in Washington DC.  Joaquin has been featured in the internationally renowned Festival Flamenco Internacional.  He performs throughout the United States as a solo artist and with Omayra Amaya.  Joaquin is co-founder and co-director of the National Institute of Flamenco.  He feels blessed to be working with his mother, Eva Encinias-Sandoval and his sister Marisol Encinias in realizing his dream of founding and directing the American Flamenco Repertory Company, "Yjastros."  The AFRC is the first of its kind in the United States.
